Could be as early as next week.  Areas with more mature trees & plantings are more likely to be inundated by these periodic pishers.

The upside:

  1. Don't bite
  2. Don't carry disease
  3. Don't seriously harm trees or perennials
  4. Great supplementary pet food
  5. Awesome garden mulch
  6. Halfway decent lawn aerators
The downside:
  1. Will eat the snot out of your hostas
  2. May damage very young trees
  3. Totally squicktacular: heavily wooded areas can get more than  a million per acre
  4. OH GOD THE NOISE MAKE IT STOP MAKE IT STOP
  5. They'll be with us until late June
  6. Their empty shells will remain on your exterior walls until you hose/scrub them off

The culprit:

[actual size, for fuck's sake ]

DEAR GOD THE NOISE MAKE IT STOP, THE PHASER SOUND, IT HURTS MY EARS
